Oh my lord, these pink politicians. ELLE WOODS IS NOT COMING TO SAVE US. (I now also want that sweatsuit.)

Omg I love that eyelet set!! I would almost want to cut the shorts lining out and wear with full coverage black undies underneath - I think it would move better (and look cool).

Okay, coming back a week later to say that I DID buy the eyelet set, it arrived yesterday, and I’m obsessed!! It’s sooo good. I will definitely be wearing the pieces together and separately.

The embroidery is awesome!! And so skillful. What a cool way to refresh a shirt.

As for the Pink Ladies… it reads a bit like TikTok trend. An idea without context, so the meaning they put onto it (symbolically standing up for the rights of women and families) ends up shallow or cringe to anyone outside the trend. But I dunno. At least it wasn’t hats. Though it wasn’t far from hats. But they’re trying. It’ll land for someone. I hope.

I feel like it would have meant more just to not show up. What message was the pink supposed to send?

Expand full comment
Becky Karush's avatar

Yeah, agreed. The 19th reported the pink was meant to stand for women and family rights. But it really wasn’t a clear message. My representative was one of the Pink Ladies, actually. Seeing her in the photo of pink reps, I understood it culturally- she’s an establishment Democrat from NH, straight and white, upper middle class, wicked smart. This sorority-vibe, super feminine, Elle Woods/Smart Barbie feminist, but not too disruptive, not too aggressive thing seems like a natural fit for her culture.

The opening lines of this article are exactly me right now! I need to buy a water flosser and replacement toothbrush heads. No Walmart, Amazon, target…. I know there’s Costco but I don’t need 2 water flossers and 9 toothbrush heads! And is this doing anything?! Maybe it’s doing more than wearing pink to a dictator’s speech?

Also I LOVE those sweat pants and your embellishments!

I also now want a new sweatsuit, and need a striped denim shirt like the Gap one (how do I not already have one like this?!)!!!

I have been doing "visible mending" and my own embroidery embellishment and patches for a couple of years. I fell in love with some stuff I saw on Pinterest, and bought some good needles (they make a difference) and a magnifying light (also helps, if you're me). It's a really calming thing for me to do, too! I can zone out and quietly work with my hands. I get good things from this place: https://stonemountainfabric.com

This is way off topic, but I made those cookies from your Sunday post. The are so good! The brown butter makes all the difference. The Smitten Kitchen recipe I like calls for melted butter. I think I could brown it and get great results. I’ll have to try it. Again, for SCIENCE.

"I am continuing to to stay away from Amazon and Target, while still feeling a little pessimistic about it."

Can you say more about this? (Specifically the pessismistic part?)

I think I just feel like… is this doing anything? Like shouting into the void? But I’m doing it!!! How do you feel about it?

As someone who has never shopped Amazon and rarely goes to stores like target, I can attest that it isn’t doing much. Not unless more people get on board. But for me, it’s like the man who held a candle in front of the White House every day of the Vietnam war. He did said he did it so they wouldn’t change him. I don’t shop those places if I can help it because fuck em. Fuck em and their earth destroying ways. They may win but they won’t have my help doing it.

I totally get how it can feel like shouting into the void, Corinne.

But this is exactly it, I think — we make changes so this ugliness doesn't change us.

"They may win but they won't have my help doing it" is such a beautiful, fierce declaration. I shall steal it.

The more we let ourselves believe that what we do as individuals will never have an impact, the better the chances "they" will win.

We never know the impact our own actions will have on the folks around us if we make noise about them — ripples can turn into waves — and I think that is how movements start.

Is anyone else bothered by Universal Standard's new partnership with Anthropologie? I have relied on US for most of my clothes for years, but Anthropologie's political ties do not align with my values at all. I'm torn! US has been instrumental in improving my confidence in how I dress but now I don't trust them.

Definitely, super disappointing. It’s a huge bummer especially because there are so few other places going up to size 40!

I have been unsuccessful in my attempts to limit dopamine shopping so far.

Old Navy got me last week - I got a few 100% cotton tees to replace some that are stained/don’t fit very well.

Today, I have successfully not bought the newest Lucy&Yak Alexa pants despite them coming in a very cool print and being a staple cut in my wardrobe. https://lucyandyak.com/en-us/products/l-e-alexa-trousers-organic-cotton-wen-yee-kok-yak

Finally, I’m waiting for Free Label to release their next pre-orders for bamboo, linen, or knit — the current lyocell pre-order doesn’t appeal to me.

The sweatsuit is so cute! Right now I'm mainly contemplating yarn to buy for my next craft project, but I am tempted to get another overshirt from BBP. I feel like solid button down and band tee with trousers will be my biweekly uniform in the spring.
