I love Aja for teaching me to love a giant, brightly colored dress AND for challenging me to keep working on my relationship to shopping and fast fashion. (Emphasis on "keep working on it!")
Also I didn't say this in the interview but I totally catalogue my outfits on Pinterest (I've never posted that on Instagram ... I don't think I want that size platform, I'd rather have a more intentional following). You can find me here: http://www.pinterest.co.uk/AjaSaysHello/
I love her style. My husband and I both read “Consumed” and it definitely helped me rethink my relationship with clothes. I have noticed when I buy clothes from Target (because I still haven’t completely ended my relationship with fast fashion) they aren’t fitting the way they did when I tried them on. I’ll still wear them within an inch of their life, but it’ll give me pause the next time I’m tempted….
Honestly I just found a beginner class and went. It was mortifying at first because everyones bad at it at first but I decided to just not take it too seriously or get bummed out. Then one day, things started to click and suddenly we were off to the races. It takes a while for your body to easy into it but once it does you're like "oooooooh, this is what it should feel like".
Ok, you know how you asked us the other day who our style icons were? I didn't know Aja Barber before now (I'm sorry I didn't, too!), but I definitely love her!!!!! I don't wear alot of dresses, but I'm thinking of re-thinking that lately when I see how cool they look on certain people like Aja and Virginia Sole-Smith! My worry is, Aja and Virginia are both taller women, right? I'm only 5'2"--can I still pull this dress thing off? Will I have to alter/have altered every dress I get so it doesn't end up on the floor?
I'm 5'6 but honestly, alter things! We should all be altering clothes off the rack to make sure we get the best possible fit! I'm only just started but it's a way of life!
Okay, if Tiktok has taught me one thing it's that you CANNOT tell how tall people are on the internet!! I have no idea how tall Aja is, but Virginia and I are around the same height, if I remember correctly--5'5" or 5'6"? I think you can pull it off!!
That's great! I like to remind myself that it can also be a changing thing! You might land somewhere today and land somewhere else tomorrow. You don't have to commit FOREVER!
Another Substack I follow was mentioning style words. I came up with three but they definitely all meant the same thing 😛 I’ll figure it out eventually.

The sunglasses by the way were this EXACT pair. I paid £100 for them and I cry every time I realize what a deal they were: https://shop.danielagregis.it/en/product/40-jo16-ac-rss-melagrana-glass/
I FOUND THEM! I FOUND THE SUNGLASSES!!!!
Omg, best news ever!! Where were they?!
In a Marimekko bag I hadn't used for several months!
Those are REALLY CUTE I hope they find their way back to you!
Agh this is a heartbreaking loss! Fingers crossed they resurface!

Definitely have been noticing that, too! I got a linen shirt from Target that I loved last summer and this summer it just looks really ratty.
i love Aja look - wrinkled laundry :) But i really want to hear more about her journey into ballet as adult and how she went about it.

thanks for responding. I didn't even know there were ballet classes for beginners so i will have to see what is available in my area.

Yup, I’m 5’5”-ish! It’s wild how the Internet makes us think everyone is tall!
I want to give it a shot now! I appreciate this so much today!!😍
Glad to know someone else is avoiding polyester too!
This was fun to read. I’ve been thinking about my style words but I haven’t landed anywhere just yet.

Corinne, since you mentioned shorts, is there a place where I can comment to ask for help in finding shorts?
