What are you wearing right now?
As I type this, my family and I are headed on a mini adventure to the coast! I’m wearing a white, gauzy Old Navy button down in 4X, Ava and Viv dark denim shorts, and my trusty Orthofeet red sandals.
What was the last item of clothing you bought?
An Elizabeth Suzann Kara snap top and a pair of Gardenheir clogs in Wheat!
You are an amazing Tarot teacher and the writer behind . I love tarot and I’m just curious if there are any cards that you think about or channel when you’re thinking about clothes or style for yourself!
Knight of Wands is my style icon and North Star.
In Soul Tarot (which is the kind of Tarot I developed and teach), Knight of Wands is an invitation to move through the world in a way that feels as affirming and accessible to you as possible.
You want to have a full face of makeup just for yourself? You never want to wear makeup? Knight of Wands is the best and most passionate advocate for doing whatever the fuck you want and moving through the world in a way that feels really expansive and authentic to you, in a way that brings about as much joy as possible.
Working with that card has helped me to shed so many shitty overcultural stories about how I was supposed to present, or dress, or look and come to something that feels as good as possible for me today.
Where did you get clothes as a kid? Describe a favorite childhood outfit.
As a younger kid, I wanted to be a composite of Vada Sultenfuss from My Girl and Sue from Curly Sue, and anything that got me closer to that was a success.
As a high schooler, I got all of my clothes from three places: Kohl’s, Native Art, and Hot Topic. The latter two were located in the Willowbrook Mall in New Jersey where I grew up.
There is a photo of me not from childhood explicitly but from my high school years that is probably my favorite outfit: red, velvet, sparkly beret, bracelets up to my elbows, some random t-shirt from Goodwill, a cartoon belt (with a homemade pin with a photo of Clara Bow on the buckle, lol), pants from my costume in “Pippin,” which I was the lead in (nbd), boots from Payless Shoe Source that I covered in Tori Amos quotes, written in different gel pens. That is my true essence for sure.
Tell me about an item of clothing that you wear only to do a specific activity.
My all-time favorite item of clothing is a Shaina Mote swing coat that I would literally be buried in, I love it so much. Anytime it’s not too hot and I’m either teaching somewhere or out on a date night, I wear that coat.
What did you wear to the last party or event you attended?
I went to see The Music of Angelo Badalmenti and Twin Peaks at the Oregon Symphony with my partner and wore a modified Elizabeth Suzann pantsuit—a Kara long sleeve dress and matching Andy pants that were white that I dyed a mushroom/mauve color, with my Nisolo clogs. I felt incredible.
You mentioned to me that you live with chronic pain and if you feel open to sharing, I’d love to know more about how that affects how you decide what to wear.
I live with Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, as well as fibromyalgia. I’m in some form of pain all the time, every day. As my pain has increased, I’ve cultivated and built a new wardrobe around it that aligns with both my style and my physical capacity or lack thereof—something that I recognize takes enormous access and privilege to do.
Everything I own is unstructured, light, and loose, but there are varying degrees of loose so on days when I am in more pain, I have something that can feel supportive to my body.
Tell me about an accessory or piece of clothing that you lost or ruined but still think about.
I had an Atelier Delphine blue denim coat (similar) that I bought at Sonomama in Los Angeles (which is closed now, but will always be my all time favorite lifestyle store of all time, RIP), and it was the most incredible garment. I took it around the world with me, wore it everywhere, cherished it. I lost or misplaced it a few years ago and it was a huge and very sad loss.
I’m also curious if you think there are any outfits or style choices that stand out to you in the Tarot deck, or if there are other decks that you think do a great job with clothes / style or anything like that.
I feel like all of the folks in the Smith-Rider-Waite look so good! I tend to dress more neutrally, in terms of gender, but I love the High Priestess and Queen of Cups’ looks — King of Pentacles is my personal favorite.
I think for epic style in Tarot decks, Cristy C. Road and Charlie Claire Burgess nail it so epically in their decks.
What’s one of your current closet must-haves?
I quite literally couldn’t live without my Curator SF Larkin pant. I have multiple pairs and cycle through them constantly. They’re incredible.
Who do you think has good style?
You! Jessamyn Stanley, Cody Cook-Parrott, Cara Marie Piazza, Ayo Edebiri, Georgia O’Keefe, Fran Liebowitz, Aidy Bryant, Robby Hoffman, Chessie from The Parent Trap — so many icons.
Anything else you want to tell us about getting dressed?
You deserve to look however makes you feel best, and highly recommend (if you can afford to do so) having clothes that can come with you through natural weight and physical shifts and changes. Our bodies change, and normalizing having clothes that fit through those changes is a great thing to reclaim.
A Summer Tarot pull for the Big Undies community!
The World Reversed!
The World card is a titanic energy. I always honor all Tarot cards as being valuable and important, but when I see The World show up in a reading, I sit up and pay attention to a different degree.
No Tarot card can ever reliably and consistently tell us what the future holds,* so we’re looking to The World card as more of a heads up about the currents and rhythms of our internal and external river for these summer months. Knowing what card is showing up for us can assist us in not fighting that current, but flowing with its invitation.
The World card represents a completion point around something that we have been working on for a long, long time. It is not the end of a book, but the last sentence in the last chapter of a book series that we have been symbolically poring over for years. An era is finished, and we are beyond ready to welcome in a fresh, new cycle.
The World card does hold this beautiful and epic sense of endings and beginnings, but is also concerned with making sure that we don’t take anything with us into this new chapter that we’re complete with. A lot of the time, we predominantly feel this latter essence when we work with The World card, like we’re taking six forms of ID to a counter to get our clearance for this new chapter.
When The World card shows up reversed (as it has for us in this reading), it’s a gentle heads up that this “paperwork” part of the card is going to be even more enhanced than it might typically be. The truth is that this summer is a really powerful portal of self-reflection and change for all of us. We’re right on the verge of huge things. So much is changing and evolving rapidly in the collective, so it stands to reason that our own personal experiences will reflect that.
Working with The World card when reversed might feel like having a great and exciting idea, but needing to take a ton of time to figure out how you’ll execute it, how you’ll roll it out, and how you’ll pay for it before you can get to the dreamy, creation period.
I invite you to trust in the interior and exterior work that will allow for this vision to finally expand open once it’s time. It might be a drag in moments, but it will be so worth it. You have everything you need to do this.
*unless you are working within a more traditional/closed practice with the Tarot – highly recommend this book by Jezmina Von Thiele and Paulina Stevens for more information about the history and practice of Romani Tarot readers!
