Making Waves Fat Swim (in Albany, CA) got me back in the pool! I went off and on for a couple of years before I moved out of the area. Highly recommend it to folks living in the SF Bay! There is space to swim laps and lots of room to just hang out. The Resistance Gym in Concord, CA, also organized a swim clinic, which I did a few sessions of before I moved. This was focused specifically on swim skills, with an experienced coach.

All of that set me up well for feeling comfortable enough to get back into swimming regularly in my new hometown. Mine is usually the only fat body in the pool, but I'm there 3x/week most weeks anyway, because being in the water is the only place where I can move my body without triggering arthritis pain flare ups. I'm also working with a physical therapist on knee pain and lately she and I have been doing aqua therapy so I can even do some of my PT exercises in the pool.

I feel very fortunate to have great pool access where it's never crowded during the hours I visit.

There's no fat swim in town - yet - but a local group for fat folks just started up so maybe that's in the future!

I learned about this a couple of months ago. (On a body positive yoga and beginner surfing retreat but that is a story of another time.) But I have yet to join. I need to put it on my summer bucket list! I am in the pool once a week because I teach aqua fitness but it would be nice to hang out and just chill in the pool.

Yes! Check on their IG for dates. It's most Sundays but there are exceptions if there's a swim meet or if there's a big event on Solano and parking will be severely impacted. @makingwavesfatswim on IG!

I was in the East Bay for 14 years up until last year! I wish I had known about this. Luckily I moved to Albuquerque so I still get fat swim. Ill spread the word to folks I know still in the East Bay.

We have been members of a pool since the summer my 6 yo was born. We went the last day of school and then I went to the pool with a splash pad at the beach last week. There’s also a local park pool with several water slides that we plan to go to again this summer but haven’t made it yet.

What a lovely idea! I swam 15 laps of 50 feet each last Sunday. I have sent a goal to swim one mile — 36 laps — by next June. I’ll do my own Fat Swim if I have to!
