What Are Your Fall Fashion Must-Haves?
Plus all of the recs from people I love, respect and admire
One of my favorite autumnal traditions is asking everyone I know what their “Fall Fashion Must-Haves” are. I don’t know where I got this idea or even this phrase, but I find that everyone has something interesting to say about it. Discussing “must-haves” in the context of seasonal fashion brings me joy because most of these things really aren’t necessities; it feels like engaging in a moment of imaginative play. Your must-haves can be as necessary or unnecessary, as abstract or literal, as impossible or available as you want.
My own fall must-haves are still emerging from summer fashion fog. I’d like some loafers, but not totally sure how to style them and if they would be comfortable on my feet. I love this idea of wearing a floofy prize ribbon as an accessory, but is this something that works in real life? And I always want another field jacket, but do I need one? I have a canvas coat and a corduroy coat, but I don’t have a canvas coat with a corduroy collar. I have been stalking a few vintage Carhartt ones on Ebay, as well.
Below you’ll find fall fashion musings from a whole bunch of people—friends, colleagues, people into fashion and people not at all. A lot of people have similar things in mind—boots! hoodies!—and there are lots of unique perspectives as well.
And so now I’m asking you—what are your Fall 2024 fashion must-haves?
An Unofficial List of Fall 2024 Must Haves from People I Love, Respect, and Admire
1. Whenever temps start to dip I love styling socks with mary janes, T-bar shoes, and low profile sneakers. My favorite are these from Le Bonne Shoppe.
2. I'm more of a bonnet than a baseball cap girl, and have collected some secondhand Clyde bonnets over the years.
3. Tbh, the Keen Jasper style has really grown on me this year. I've worn it with long skirts for summer travel and see myself wearing it with jeans or miniskirts + knee socks this fall. I've written about the climbing-inspired shoe on my newsletter before, and I think it's a great sneaker style if you're looking for something a bit more crunchy-gorpy-weird than Sambas, you know??
