It's way more satisfying to impress kids than it is to impress adults. Kids GASP, POINT, YELL, LAUGH, etc.!!! I once thrifted a pair of clown pants from Value Village and basically created a parade of toddlers wherever I went.
I love this so much, and LOVE Harriet's style (OMG, that denim shirt!) so much!!! And her whole attitude is priceless! "There have been many comments on the internet where someone has felt compelled to tell me I look like I'm wearing a tent, or that something I’m wearing is not flattering, but I dress for myself, not other people." EXACTLY, because a) You look amazing and you also are comfortable, and b) Fuck 'em--nobody asked them for their fashion opinion. I wore a bright pink corduroy jacket that had a big pink heart in a lighter pink color sewn on the back of it to greet at church a couple of years ago. I had a couple of people ( both women) tell me that I was both a little too large and a little too old to be wearing something like that. One of them did tell me that I was "brave" for wearing it though! These were people who were my "team" members. I also had tons of compliments from people I greeted, lots from kids especially. I felt like a winner :) I also don't go to that church anymore; I found one that likes all kinds of people <3

People are always giving unsolicited opinions and advice, but they're wasting their time giving it to me, because while they're talking I'm mentally filing everything they say in the trash (with a smile on my face) 😂 I'm absolutely still wearing that jacket; it's one of my favorites!!! I got it from Shiny by Nature, but I don't think they still have them. They've changed quite a bit.
I am also inspired by my kids and their sense of style. They wear patterns together and bright colors…it’s one of the reasons I started revising my wardrobe. Theirs looked so fun and mine was so drab with nothing but black, navy blue, and grey. 😞 but now it’s more vibrant. I love embracing what feels right to you.
Just reading this post after… gasp… cleaning out my damn overflowing closet. It feels so freeing!! I’m excited to look into Harriet’s No Buy styling ideas now that I’ve committed to sticking with what I’ve got for at least a month. I’m hoping I can hold out for longer but I’m trying not to be an unrealistic jerk to myself until I can figure out what I actually want and need.

I love it, and totally agree about kids as a style inspiration. My outfits have become so much more interesting (and colourful!) since I started thinking about dressing/my wardrobe through the eyes of my kids. Like, what messages am I sending them when I eschew dark colours and/or avoid the shades they love? I started wearing pink and patterns again and am surprised by how much I love it (how did I forget that I loved these things???)
Anyway, I’m also so inspired by the no-buy a creative approach vs restriction. Something to think about as I contemplate how to slow my own consumption.
