Yay, I loved this! I bought The Dress based on how many times I've seen pics of Emma wearing it and I also treat it as The Dress. Every time I wear it, people trip over themselves to compliment me/it, which is nice, I think, lol.
I remember getting a review of my first book back in the day that included the phrase "painstakingly detailed descriptions of their clothes." Why yes I DID take pains! For all the reasons Emma cites above!
You know who described her character’s clothing? JANE AUSTEN. Not on every page, but Austen definitely used clothing to create her characters. Less exalted than Austen is Georgette Heyer, who gives us a picture of everything her main characters, both male and female, are wearing. I realize this book is highly problematic now, but the first thing we ever learn about Scarlett O’Hara is that she’s wearing ‘green sprigged muslin’ that matched her eyes. Any description can be done badly, but excluding one entire category of it deprives the reader of a way to understand the characters.
The Dress 😍🤩 I mean, WOW. But also the more subdued look with the trench and the button-down and the umbrella. Such an inspiring interview and series of photos.
Y’all this is maybe not the takeaway but I have been CLICKING the Instagram ad link to those Flabelus Mary Jane’s for weeks! Curious if anyone has a pair and can report back to the class :)
“The body is a plot” I love reading this. It validates my own uncanny ability to recall what I was wearing in particular situations & absolutely clothes as community communication!!!!
I too had a “The Dress” also green albeit a forest green, very short soft and stretchy that I called my “power dress” sooo many good times w/ that thing. Alas it was passed on years ago & wouldn’t fit me now anyways. But it makes me realize I’ve yet to find its replacement and I need too… it seems a bit of luck & chance too to a find just the dress that becomes “The Dress.”
I ALWAYS want to know what characters in novels are wearing.
💞💞💞
I love The Dress and that yellow jumpsuit with pink clogs. Thanks, Emma!

Another great person with fabulous style. I like everything but especially the velvet Mary Janes!

They’re super cute, I am now getting hit hard with the ads
Sorryyyyy
Outfits to wear when meeting with someone who intimidates me was revelatory as I hadn’t put it together. Public-testimony-core.
