What If Convenience Is the Problem?
DoorDash & Friction-Maxxing
At the beginning of the year, I read a whistleblower post on Reddit that made UberEats sound so unequivocally evil that I swore I would stop using all food delivery apps. According to the whistleblower, UberEats was assigning drivers a “desperation score,” and sending the most desperate-for-money drivers the lowest-paying jobs because they knew they’d be more likely to take even poorly paying gigs. They were lowering base pay for drivers (whom they called human assets) when customers tipped higher. Demonic! Something I wanted no part in! I was done.
Despite our collective desire to not spend precious hours doing annoying, exhausting tasks... not doing them, it turns out, might be bad for everybody.
