I looooove that wool Sherpa sweatshirt! I’ve never heard of that brand before, either. I’m doing a low-buy 2025 and I feel like I should keep a list of what I *haven’t* bought. I really want the Pilcro carpenter barrel jeans and Maeve strawberry printed skirt from Anthro and the Area crossbody purse from Orla Kiely (it’s on sale!) and the Story bookcase from DWR (also on sale)….I haven’t bought anything yet this month, either, and I think I may try not to until I can get my head on straight. The only item I have an actual need for, and that would solve a current problem is the bookcase, but I don’t have the money for it anyway. Ah, well.
You should definitely keep a list of the stuff you don’t buy!! I’d be curious to see if you end up regretting not buying anything or if the desire fades.
I keep a list called "things I want" in my notes app on my phone that functions similarly to a list of things I didn't buy - it helps me keep away from impulsive shopping, and often just adding something to the list scratches some kind of itch. I know folks who do something similar with pinterest, but it has never worked for me to have to copy links or do pinning or whatever. A side benefit is that I have a sort of handy wishlist when my spouse asks me what I want for xmas or birthday. It's interesting to go back and review the list periodically - I generally find that I can easily delete things over time as I often feel like "I don't even know why I wanted this so badly in the first place".
I love the idea of keeping a list of what I don’t buy! I don’t have the money to buy anything anyway. I’m also curious about desire and if it fades at all.
That denim vest looks bunchy in all the pictures on the US site, which seems like a bad omen to me. If they can't get the fit right for a photo shoot with all their stylists, what hope do us mere mortals have for daily wear.
I have two of those exact old navy shirts and legit am wearing one right now! They are surprisingly nice—kind of heavy/high quality feeling.
I have one that I sized down once that still has a nice boxy feel and another sized down twice for a more fitted feel. I personally think they run big even with the intention of a boxy fit.
I’ve been on the look out for a pack able light puffer jacket. I just need something not too bulky that I can throw on for schools runs. Trying to do more second hand buying so I ordered a used Eddie Bauer jacket on eBay. Crossing my fingers it works out when it arrives.
Re big head hat recommendations: i too have a really big head (so big ‘regular’ ball caps dont fit) and i really like the brand odd job hats. I have bought several hats, including beanies and the fit and quality it great. They have a bunch of different styles and colors but def more masc leaning, so the closest to a hot pink is a maroon or orange.
I'm doing a no shopping month as a sort of financial reset. I have some financial goals in working towards and evaluating my spending seems like a good first step. I took have been in conversation with myself about my consumerism over the last few years and am always trying to exam that. My weakness is books and beauty products/skincare. And while I think lots of readers and books people make space for buying books, I truly have more then I could read in a year at this point. My "rules" are very flexible. Things I feel I need immediately like the toilet snake Virginia Sole Smith talked about in December burnt toast was purchased because my toilet sounds like it's running slow. I also biught a couple of books at a local bookstore event because the author was there signing them. Other than that, I'm making a list of things I think I "need" / want and will evaluate in February.
As a retired librarian, I highly recommend borrowing books from the public library. Libraries are one of the most important resources we have, and they're free! I very rarely buy a book anymore, and, between my Kindle and actual books, I have more than enough to read. I have a special tote bag where I put books I've finished or haven't liked, which reminds me to return them so others can enjoy them. Getting into the habit may take a little while, but I find that not spending unnecessary money is a great motivator!
Books used to be my siren song. I tried using the library but kept forgetting to return them on time and always had to pay fines. Then, about 8 years ago, my daughter gave me a Kobo e-reader.
At first, I really missed the feeling of a book; the smell, the feel of the paper, turning the pages, but now I love my Kobo. I can download books from the library, I don't have to wait for paperback editions because I can put a hold on new releases. It's great when I travel, I don't have to pack a bunch of books; I just load my Kobo.
I have free space on shelves in my small apartment to display/store things I love.
Cookbooks and graphic novels don't work for me on an e-reader so I still buy those.
I love my Kobo, It's saved me a small fortune over the years.
I want a sweater vest. More specifically I want this perfect avocado green sweater vest that haunts me on Pinterest, appearing in multiple collages week after week as if it is mocking me by reminding how many ways I could style it: https://pin.it/59jJgglni. After a deep dive into a rabbit hole to find the original source it turns out that it is a KNITTING PATTERN and I will never, ever knit my own perfect green sweater vest.
WOW I do love that green sweater vest! It's perfect! And one solution to the knitting pattern thing--you can hire people to knit or sew stuff for you! I've used upwork to hire someone to sew something for me and theres also a subreddit called "knitrequest" where you can do this! No idea if the cost would be prohibitive--but something to know about!
I'm currently in a strange place clothing wise. Moved from a mild climate (Bay Area, CA) to Virginia right into a winter storm and cold snap. Trying to decide if my current coats are going to be good enough (and reminding myself that it's usually not quite this cold!) or if I want to try out some more (and go though the order / return process that is plus size shopping). Might keep an eye out for end of season sales over the next month or so and see what is out there. While I'm a 2X in most tops, I struggle to find coats that are long enough to keep me warm that also fit through the belly and hips, even when I go up a size to a 3X.
Also realizing almost all of my sweaters are lightweight or midweight so I'm doing a lot of layering to stay comfortable in the cold!
Do you like to shop thrift stores? This is the perfect time to look for sweaters and coats because people got new ones for Christmas and donate their old ones. It may not be any more time consuming than ordering and returning things.
I do and I don't. The selection in my size in stores is pretty abysmal so it often feels fruitless to thrift for clothes in person. But this thread did inspire me to do some eBay searching last night and I have a vintage 100% wool hip length coat on the way! It may not be any warmer than my two puffy coats but it'll give me a totally different style option.
Southwest Virginia resident here -- keep on layering for your first winter/spring season here and wait and see. The current cold snap is unusual, and preparing for all our winters to be like this is going to cost you money that you won't get back in wearing your warm coats and jackets all that much. I'm dressed up as hell for Sunday School this morning with some great black lace pantyhose and threw on a pair of leggings over the hose when I got home from church. Layering will do you nicely until you get used to the climate.
I tend to run cold so even in California winter I did a lot of layering. So far I've been able to stay plenty warm with the only necessary purchase being a pair of proper winter boots (which will also be good for cold and rainy days).
I wonder about that yoke on the sweatshirt too! If the seam in the inside feels weird, I think it might bother me. I'm also hit or miss on non-vnecks, so I think with those two worries, it'd be a no for me.
On the other hand, I've got the fatty in a cart right now, because as a sensitive skinned gal with lots of tattoos that need moisturizing, it looks perfect! I'm super intrigued by the company's spray moisturizer too, because they say it can be used as a mosquito repellant! I'm a mosquito magnet and regular bug spray makes me feel yucky. So I'm gonna give it a shot closer to summer/outdoors weather.
Okay as a sensitive skinned person with tattoos I think you’ll really like the fatty. I did also try the water balm—that’s the one you’re talking about right?? I LOVED the texture but the scent was too strong for me. I actually thought it smelled good but it just lingered a little too much for me!
Yes, the water balm! Thanks for letting me know about the scent, that could be a deal-breaker for me too. I'm very particular about what I can smell like. Time to reconsider the water balm while I go full steam ahead on the fatty.
The scent is probably what repels the mosquitoes. Maybe it would be okay outdoors. I agree on regular bug spray. I feel like I’m spraying poison all over myself (which, of course, I am).
I’m liking hat I read about the fatty and other products in the line. I’m not really troubled by the name (well I was a bit intitially, but after reading about it it didn’t seem as bad). Thanks for the recs
I recently bought a denim vest and I wear it alone with denim jeans (and a duster cardigan over) but also over tee dresses and I get more complements on it than almost any other piece of clothing I own. In fact, I went and bought it again in a different colorway, tan. All this to say, get a denim vest.
I haven't had the urge to buy any clothing items right now as I've been focusing on actually putting my laundry away (lol) and adding items to Whering. I do find myself getting a little bored with my sweater collection at the moment. Trying to focus that energy into re-starting the cardigan I frogged from last year. Also, today is a surprisingly balmy 40 degrees, so I was able to wear a lighter weight cardigan I hadn't worn in a while today which is helping.
One of my crafting goals this year is to make a sweater vest and I love the color of the one you shared! Also planning to crochet a striped beanie in light blue and maroon.
Somehow sent this out 12 hours early! Whoops :/
I was confused, but also delighted :)
I was so happy to see it Sunday evening!
I'm kind of curious if that's actually a better time to send it out!
I'm happy to see it whenever it appears!
Me too!

Oooh I hope you love it! Keep me posted.
Got it today and it’s exactly what I was hoping for!
What about Uniqlo? I don't need a warm puffer but people rave about them online. https://www.uniqlo.com/us/en/women/outerwear-and-blazers/jackets-and-parkas?path=%2C%2C23329%2C. Crossing my fingers as well on the Eddie Bauer jacket.

OOH yes, I came across this brand in my search but forgot about them because of the no hot pink. An oversight! But glad to have your endorsement!!

My second choice would be this perfect burgendy sweater vest Mac Rose often wears on IG: https://www.instagram.com/p/DAldRb0OI2-/.

I think that might also be a good solution to the big head pink beanie problem! A beanie is something that even a novice knitter could take on.
the denim vest feels very Avril Lavigne, basement punk show, skinny tie, pins, so if that's the vibe.... then yes :)
OH gosh, I do not think that is the vibe!
Outerknown has a good sweater vest, up to xxl

Omg, Street and Saddle is a new-to-me brand and I’m excited. Gorgeous clothes, inclusive sizing, Canadian… thanks for sharing!
