You have heard me say (ad nauseam) that I need to organize my closet. And as I have been wrapping my brain around that, I realized (thanks in part to this post) that the first and *non-negotiable* step is actually decluttering.
It’s the essential first step of any organizing undertaking. The hard truth is there is no way around this. The only way out is through. You just have to do it.
I don’t think I realized that decluttering was simply… getting rid of stuff? I thought it meant tidying or organizing the clutter. Like putting all the clutter away or into piles? Am I the only person who had this misconception? Is this an ADHD thing?? But no, decluttering means physically removing the clutter. Getting rid of it.
Finding (making?) some new closet infrastructure is my ultimate goal—I currently have a metro rack stacked high with piles of folded clothes—but before that I need to just… let some stuff go. Which, easier said than done, right? It feels daunting! I have held onto years and years worth of clothes that I bought out of panic or a sense of scarcity, as someone with a body that’s perpetually ignored by the fashion industry.
I hope you are interested in coming along for the ride, as I clear out my closet and find a better organizational system. It’s time to let go. And I hope maybe you will share some insights of your own with me—I can use all the help I can get! But for now, I'm going to try take it one shelf at a time.
